Recently, I’ve been a hearing a theme in conversations about the desire to claim and showcase more work achievements and successes, but to do it in a way that doesn’t come off as “bragging.” First of all, claiming your achievements is essential for professional growth, but doing so without sounding like a braggart can be a delicate balance. However, you may be asking yourself, “when is the right time?”

It may be the right time if you’ve received any feedback that your leadership team doesn’t know all the hard work you’ve been doing? Or, you may be feeling like you’re not being seen or noticed for your outstanding accomplishments and hard work? This feeling can deflate your tires and is demotivating.

Here are some strategies to highlight your successes while maintaining humility and professionalism.

1) Communicate Your Impact

Firstly, ensure that your manager notices your contributions. Keep them informed about your accomplishments and the positive impact you’re making in your role. Instead of simply focusing on your achievements, and the work being accomplished, emphasize how your work aligns with the company’s goals and objectives. Remember, highlight the impact of your contribution in your communication. This demonstrates your commitment to the overall success of the organization.

2) Identify Contributions From Others

Minimize self-promotion by highlighting the support and collaboration you receive from others. Acknowledge the contributions of your colleagues and give credit where it’s due. For instance, if you were a top achiever in another market and had a supervisor who played a crucial role in your success mention their guidance and mentorship, but don’t forget to highlight your impact from the mentorship provided. This not only showcases your achievements but also shows that you value teamwork and recognize the contributions of others.

3) Focus on Passion, Growth and Learning

When sharing there may be opportunity to express your ambitions for the future, focus on your passion for growth and learning. Instead of solely emphasizing your desired job titles, discuss the skills and expertise you aim to develop and how they align with the company’s vision. This approach demonstrates your commitment to personal and professional development. This takes the work you are currently doing one step further.

4) Be Consistent

Be mindful of your consistency when it comes to communicating your achievements. Maintaining regular communication with your manager and leadership team projects confidence and assertiveness. Involve them in strategic discussions and decisions, seeking their guidance and input. This not only shows your commitment to collaboration but also allows your manager to see your thought process and the value you bring to the table. It may be beneficial to bring them into the strategy and the decisions you are making.

5) Show Gratitude

To build your personal brand as a leader, actively recognize and appreciate the key individuals in your network. By showing gratitude and acknowledging their contributions consistently, you create a reciprocal energy that fosters positive relationships and opens doors to new opportunities.

Remember, claiming your achievements doesn’t have to be boastful. By focusing on the value you bring, recognizing the contributions of others, and staying humble and authentic, you can effectively showcase your accomplishments while maintaining professionalism and respect.
